Facilities Green Partnership with School of Engineering
The UAB Facilities Energy Management Department has recently partnered with the School of Engineering on several “Green” projects:
- Green Roof Design is under research at UAB with 15 miniature test roofs on top of the Chemistry building
(see attached newsletter)
- The Energy Management Department, partnering with the School of Engineering and utilizing engineering students, has begun occupancy surveys of campus buildings to evaluate energy conservation measures related to the hours of operation for classroom schedules, classroom selections, student labs, study areas, etc. Education building and Hill University building were surveyed during the summer semester. More buildings have been selected for the fall semester. The data and energy conservation recommendations will be presented to deans or building administrators after the reports have been finalized after the fall semester. It is hoped that through this analysis that the University can use their buildings more efficiently by grouping their classes together and allowing building wings, floors or entire buildings to be shutdown at night, thus reducing energy consumption and reducing light pollution. Building examples: HUC and Education.
- Facilities has partnered with the School of Engineering beginning with the 2007 Fall Semester to utilize the Senior Engineering Student Design project to research and propose a design for a green grass roof for an existing UAB Campus Building (Hulsey Building may be a good choice).
