A Tradition of Excellence
The Facilities Divisions at UAB is a tremendous asset to this wonderful university and has established a Tradition of Excellence which is truly outstanding. It has been my privilege to serve as President of the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers (APPA) for the past year, a group of facilities managers from institutions of higher education of all sizes. Through my service in this association, I was able to visit a number of universities and to visit their facilities and facilities organizations.
Comparing the work that each of you do in the UAB Facilities Division to what we see in other universities makes me very proud to be associated with you. There are many beautiful and well maintained colleges and universities around the country, but none do a better job than you do. Your attitude toward our customers and your quality of work is wonderful, and everyone appreciates you for that.
About ten years ago, we began a program called Total Quality Management (TQM) in the Facilities Division. This program was designed to help us provide “A Quality Environment” for UAB so we could fulfill our university’s mission of teaching, providing patient care, and performing research. you will be having opportunities to participate in a revival of this effort which is designed to help us get even better at what we do. Many of you have some great ideas which we can use to benefit our organization, and we will be anxious to hear them. Watch for ways to put your ideas to work and help us become a better place to work and the best Facilities organization in the country. Hopefully as you learn more about this, it will be something that will peak your interest.
