Central Utilities

 

Centrifugal chillers maintained by Central Utilities range from 110 tons to 4,000 tons each. These 30 centrifugal chillers provide chilled water needed for air conditioning in a total of 54 UAB buildings. Forty six (46) of these buildings are on the Central Utilities System. This system is comprised of three (3) plants, Central Utilities #1, Central Utilities #3, and Central Utilities #5, with 38,100 tons installed capacity and a piping distribution system located underground. The underground chilled water piping size ranges from 6 inch to 36 inch in diameter. Smaller centrifugal chillers located in eight (8) decentralized buildings are also maintained by Central Utilities personnel.
